Deforestation in Costa Rica
Students in EAP1502(Accent Reduction 2) will improve their oral and listening communication skills, using academic science vocabulary to improve their academic literacy in English. By studying rainforests, students will increase their understanding of biodiversity, cultural diversity, geography and the need for human stewardship of the earth. Our focus will be on the study of rainforests as an integrated system: environmental and human challenges and economic and political objectives/consequences. This course is designed to help EAP students prepare for the rigors of regular college classes.
Focus on fluency, pronunciation and grammar to deliver college level presentations

Connect saving rainforests with preserving biodiversity
Learn about Chico Mendes' life
Embrace an appreciation for nature
Students collect data about the rainforest using a variety of print/non-print materials and resources
Students interact with community resource experts to learn about the characteristics and history of rainforests.
Students visit Fairchild Tropical Gardens or places where they can observe rainforest recreations.
Data that students compile is incorporated into a variety of oral/written/visual presentations.
Assessment: Students demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills by:
1. Identifying where rainforests are located in the world
2. Preparing PowerPoint presentations on the rainforests
3. Debating the role of Chico Mendes after seeing film and reading bio
4. Choosing a nature poem to memorize, recite and discuss
5. Creating an ePortfolio to showcase learning outcomes
6. Reflecting on changes in attitude towards the environment, improvement in spoken English and oral presentation skills and technology learned (mp3 file uploaded to ePortfolio)
