The three Brontë sisters: Charlotte (b. 1816), Emily (b. 1818), and Anne (b. 1820) were all born in the village of Thornton in Yorkshire. They spent most of their lives nearly at Haworth where their father was vicar. They were largely educated at home. All three achieved their goal of becoming successful novelists.
Great Books: Walden
Emphasizing the importance of spirituality over materialism, this classic work of American Transcendentalism urges people to free themselves from the “quiet desperation” of their lives. Interviews with Don Henley of the Eagles, founder of the Walden Woods Project, and former President Jimmy Carter reveal the power Thoreau’s thinking exerts in the American psyche. Produced by Discovery Channel School.

Science

On the Gulf: Coastlines in Danger

Elements of Physics: Modern Physics and Cosmology
This is a program on the way that modern physics has revolutionized the way we understand our universe. Physicists found that the sub-atomic world does not follow the laws of classical physics and developed quantum theory to give a more exact explanation. Einstein developed his special theory of relativity to explain what happens when objects travel close to the speed of light and later developed the general theory of relativity, which provided a new explanation of gravity. These theories have shed light on the existence of black holes and the origins of the universe.

Math

Math at Work
Everywhere you look, math is there! From architecture and artistry to skateboarding and soccer … even fossil hunting, Math At Work takes students behind the scenes to explore how math is fundamental to our daily lives. Lively interviews with a cellist, glider pilot, video game designer, and many others provide insight to the important tool of math.
